The P-39 Airacobra is one of the most interesting and innovative fighters of World War II. The Airacobra was produced by Bell Aircraft for the United States Army Air Forces during World War II.
It had an unusual layout, with the engine in the centre fuselage, behind the pilot and driving a propeller in the nose with a long shaft. It was also the first fighter to be fitted with a tricycle undercarriage.
Although it's mid engine placement was innovative, the P-39 had no turbo super-charger, preventing it from performing well at high altitude. For this reason it was rejected by the RAF for use over Western Europe but adopted by the USSR, where most air combat took place at low and medium altitudes.
Along with it's innovative design and distinctive looks, the P-39 was one of the most successful fixed wing aircraft built by Bell.
