The Hawker Typhoon was originally designed to be a replacement for the Hawker Hurricane but it had design problems so it never met the requirements.
In 1941 the Luftwaffe brought the formidable Focke-Wulf 190 into service and the Typhoon was the only RAF fighter capable of catching it at low altitude. After a troubled start the Typhoon found its role as a low altitude interceptor.
As the Typhoon improved it found new roles such as night fighter and ground attack. The Typhoon was eventually fitted with bombs and in 1943 rockets were added to its armoury. The Typhoon went on to become one of the Wars most successful ground attack aircraft.
