This is a model of the Lancaster B.III flown by 617 Squadron in the most famous raid of The Second World War, Operation Chastise.
This is the new re-release of the Airfix Dambusters Lancaster model kit featuring 2 scheme options.
617 Squadron carried out Operation Chastise, an attack on German dams in May 1943. The Lancaster B.III carrying the purpose built Bouncing Bomb designed by Barnes Wallis was used to carry out the raid.
The Bouncing Bomb was designed to skip over the torpedo nets, hit the dam and roll down the side and explode under water against the dam. The bomb had to be dropped from a very low altitude which required some of the most daring flying of the War.
617 Squadron led by Guy Gibson had to fly at a speed of 240mph at a height of just 60ft to drop the bomb. This seemingly impossible task was carried out by expert crews in the Avro Lancaster B.III
If you are looking to build a model of an aviation icon from one of the most famous military raids in history, then the Dambusters Lancaster should be top of the list.
